Trinity

We’ve just celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity.

Trinity:

Three persons in one God?

What nonsense is this?

If there is a God,

Then surely, He is One?

Mystery:

Profoundly troubling?

Hardly concocted by man?

Is there a logic here?

Does this revelation resonate?

Godhead:

Can only be self-sufficient,

Eternally complete.

Otherwise God needs something,

And then God is not God.

God-nature:

God is love.

Amen, amen, amen!

And love cannot be One.

Relationship is all.

Trinity:

God is perfect, unchanging,

Eternally self-sufficient.

The simple logic of love:

God is a community.

Trinity:

Father, Son, Spirit,

From all time, for all time,

The original family,

Perfect synergy of love.

Humankind:

We were not essential.

God did not need us.

A blow to our pride?

Or something more wonderful?

Overflowing:

God’s gracious design:

Beings in His own image,

Who might reciprocate love,

Only through radical freedom.

Unconditional:

His love is primary,

Given with no strings attached.

We can only dare to hope,

Because – God is love.

Trinity:

Now we know love’s Name.

Jesus:  Word and Sacrament.

Sent by the Father,

Present through the Spirit.

Trinity:

This is what love is!

Perfect mutual self-giving.

Brimming over, superabundant,

Expressed in Creation.

Glory be:

To the Father,

And to the Son,

And to the Holy Spirit.

Amen alleluia!
